Never knew St. Anthony had a devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus before.....
St Anthony is also the patron saint of the University of Padua. Some of you may remember that the Shroud of Turin was reported to be a hoax by a team of investigators some years ago and this was reported all over the world. The researchers against what had been agreed with the Church took three postage stamp samples from one area of the Shroud. It turns out from the one area that is different from the rest of the Shroud and which it is thought was likely an attempt to patch the shroud after a fire.
Why the investigators broke their protocol agreement and only chose samples from the one area and from the one area that was different and why they did not send the samples to different independent laboratories is unclear.
However there is no doubt that their finding that the fibre from the patched area that they tested which dated to medieval times, really damaged the reputation for authenticity of the shroud as a genuine artcle and the burial cloth of Our Lord's body. They couldn't get it published in reputable journals at the time but the slur against the shroud remains to this day.
It was however I think in 2012 that scientists in the University of Padua, where St. Anthony is the patron, who had a devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus repeated the test but this time sampled away from the patch. This time their range in terms of dating the shroud did include the era in which Our Lord lived and died.
Maybe a coincidence? But then nothing is a coincidence with God.
